Windermere sits in one of the wettest postcodes in England, and the homes that line the shore and rise into the surrounding fells pay for their views in weather. Driving rain, prolonged damp and the bright, reflected light coming back off the lake will find every weak point in a painted surface — which is why exterior work here has to be planned around the climate, not in spite of it.
We see a real mix: smooth and pebbledash render on inter-war villas, painted Lakeland stone on older cottages, timber barge boards and sash windows on the larger Edwardian houses around Bowness Road, and modern fibre-cement cladding on contemporary lake-view builds. Each needs a different system — and a different primer.
Long-lived exteriors begin with patient repair. We rake out failed pointing, cut out and replace rotten timber, treat any signs of microbial growth with a biocidal wash, and only then move on to filling and sanding. Painting over moisture or movement is the fastest route to a five-year repaint cycle — we'd rather give you fifteen.
On render we favour high-build, breathable masonry coatings that shed water but allow vapour to escape. On timber we use flexible, microporous systems that move with the wood through wet winters and warm summers. Every system is matched to the substrate and to the elevation — south-facing walls take far more UV than north-facing ones.
We watch the forecast carefully and plan exterior work for the drier windows between April and October. Where a project runs beyond that, we'll stage the elevations so the most exposed walls are done first, while conditions hold.
