Window Repair & Restoration

Period timber windows are worth saving. We restore sash and casement windows throughout Cumbria and the Lake District — stripping back failed paint, cutting out and splicing in new timber where rot has set in, re-puttying glazing and finishing with a hand-painted system designed for the local climate.

Window restoration

Paint stripping and timber repair

Multiple layers of failed paint are removed by a combination of careful heat, scraping and sanding. Soft or rotten timber is cut back to sound wood and spliced or filled with two-part epoxy resin systems designed for exterior joinery.

Re-puttying and glazing

Old, cracked linseed putty is raked out and replaced. Glass is re-bedded where needed and primed before fresh putty is bedded, tooled and allowed to cure before painting.

Hand-painted finish

Bare timber is primed, knots are sealed with shellac, and three coats of premium micro-porous exterior paint are brushed on. Cuts at glass are crisp, sash runs are kept clear, and the windows operate properly when we hand back.

Frequently asked

Questions about window restoration

Can you save a rotten window or do I need to replace it?+

In most cases we can save it. Even windows that look beyond hope can usually be repaired with timber splicing and epoxy systems — and the result is stronger than a like-for-like uPVC replacement.

How long does window restoration take?+

A typical sash window takes 1–2 days per window depending on rot and paint build-up. We work in batches so the property is never fully open to the weather.
