Grange-over-Sands grew up as an Edwardian resort town, and you can read that history in its windows. Tall sashes, coloured leaded lights, deep boxed reveals and proportions you simply can't buy off the shelf today. When these windows fail it's tempting to rip them out — but in nine cases out of ten they can be restored to last another generation.
Most 'failed' sash windows in Grange aren't beyond saving. The frame is usually sound; it's the lower cill, the bottom rail of the sash, or the parting beads that have taken the weather. We probe the timber, identify the localised rot, and quote a splice repair rather than a replacement wherever possible.
Damaged sections are cut out cleanly and replaced with seasoned, like-for-like timber, glued and pinned, then planed flush. The repair disappears under the paint system and the original moulding profile is preserved exactly.
Broken sash cords are replaced with new waxed cord, weights are rebalanced, and discreet brush-pile draught seals are fitted to the sliding faces. The window still rattles open like it should — it just stops the wind whistling through it.
Restored timber is primed with a flexible, microporous undercoat and finished with two coats of breathable exterior eggshell. Done well, that's eight to twelve years before the next maintenance visit on a south-facing elevation in Morecambe Bay.
