Kendal is a town built in limestone and timber, and that shows itself in almost every interior we step into. Lath-and-plaster walls, deep skirtings, panelled doors hung on heavy hinges, and the occasional surprise of cast-iron behind a chimney breast. Interior painting here is rarely a matter of two coats and out — it is a careful conversation between old fabric and modern paint.
Many of the houses on Kirkland, Highgate and the lanes running off Stricklandgate have been decorated, redecorated and patched over generations. Beneath the most recent coat we'll often find distemper, oil-bound paints, or vinyl emulsions trapping moisture into lime plaster that needs to breathe. Getting a flawless finish starts with reading what is on the wall before deciding what should go onto it.
Every Kendal project begins with thorough preparation: washing down, scraping back failed areas, easing nail-pops, filling shrinkage cracks with the right material for the substrate, and priming bare patches so the topcoat behaves the same way across the entire wall. On lime plaster we'll specify a mineral or breathable emulsion; on modern board we'll use a standard high-quality vinyl matt. The decision is made for each room, not the whole house.
Architraves, picture rails, panelled doors and Georgian sash boxes are part of what gives a Kendal interior its quiet character. We mask, sand and hand-cut around every one of them, building water-based eggshell or traditional oil up in thin, level coats so the moulding still reads crisply once the dust settles.
The Lakes' light is soft and often grey. Cool whites can drift blue and feel clinical; warm off-whites and chalky neutrals tend to sit better on Kendal walls. We're happy to test sample patches on each elevation of a room and let you live with them for a few days before committing.
